Banking or shopping over a reputable app or an HTTPS website is generally protected by encryption, even on public Wi‑Fi. The network operator could still see that you connected to the bank or store, along with some timing and traffic information, but not normally your login or payment details. The bigger risk is a compromised network trying to redirect you to fake pages or exploit an outdated device, so avoid certificate warnings and suspicious login screens.
The main practical precaution is to treat unfamiliar Wi‑Fi as untrusted: don’t install certificates or unknown apps, don’t ignore browser security warnings, turn off automatic connection, and use mobile data or a trusted VPN for sensitive activity when possible. The restaurant staff cannot just look through your phone because you entered their password.
They can generally see network-level information such as your device’s MAC address, the local IP address it received, and DNS requests. They may also be able to tell which websites or services you’re connecting to.
