What can I do about my failing external hard drive without spending money?

I've got a 1TB external hard drive that's starting to fail, but I can't afford to replace it right now. I'm currently using it mainly for storing music production VSTs (around 300GB worth) since my internal SSDs are full from other projects, gaming, and work-related files. I also keep past projects and documents on it. I'm worried that leaving it plugged in all the time might be the issue, but I can't remember it getting physically damaged. I can't transfer everything to my computer because it's already cramped. So, what should I do?
