What can I do with an old but still capable PC that isn’t fully reliable?

After upgrading to my current computer, I have an older desktop with a GTX 1060 and otherwise usable hardware sitting around. It still has decent performance, but the motherboard is unreliable: I sometimes have to move the RAM between slots, and it occasionally needs troubleshooting. Because of that, I don't feel comfortable selling or giving it to someone who may not be very tech-savvy. My new laptop is better in every way, so I'm looking for practical or fun uses for this older system instead of letting it collect dust.

It could make a decent home media or server box. You could run Jellyfin or Plex for movies and music, or use it for Home Assistant and other smart-home services. Just keep in mind that the motherboard instability could make it frustrating for anything you need to run continuously.

Before putting time into a project, figure out whether the hardware is actually stable. If the motherboard keeps causing problems, recycling the system may be the sensible option. You can still keep useful parts such as the SSD, graphics card, power supply, or compatible RAM for another build.

Connect it to your TV with a controller and use it as a couch-gaming machine. It should handle plenty of older games, indie titles, and emulators for systems like the SNES, N64, and GameCube. A wireless keyboard and mouse with a built-in touchpad would also make it useful for general browsing and media playback.

Use it as a Linux test machine or a sandbox for experimenting with software and AI applications. Since it isn’t your primary computer, you can try different operating systems, containers, or projects without worrying about breaking anything important.
