What can I do with Linux that I couldn’t do easily on Windows?

I've just installed Linux for the first time, originally choosing Xubuntu because I'm new to Linux and interested in learning more about computers. What useful, interesting, or practical things can I explore that aren't as accessible or convenient on Windows? I'm open to beginner-friendly suggestions, tools, and projects. My hardware is older, so I may be moving to Linux Mint instead, but I understand the transition should still be fairly straightforward.

Linux gives you a lot more control over your desktop and system updates. You can customize the entire desktop environment, choose when updates happen, and eventually experiment with different kernels if you become comfortable. For now, I’d stick with the default setup and learn the basics before changing the kernel.

One especially useful area is data recovery. A Linux live environment can often access files from a drive that Windows refuses to boot with or interact with properly. Tools such as ddrescue can help copy data from a failing drive while minimizing additional damage, although you should avoid writing to the original disk whenever possible.

Install the proper hardware drivers first, especially for graphics or Wi-Fi. On Xubuntu or Mint, the Additional Drivers tool can usually handle this for you. For running some Windows programs, you can also try Wine, but compatibility varies and it may take a little configuration.

QuietPine24: For a beginner, I’d use the built-in driver utility rather than hunting for drivers online. It’s usually safer and much simpler.
