I'm helping a large organization with several buildings and roughly 3,000 employees move away from Microsoft Exchange Server 2019/SE. The environment is completely disconnected from the internet, so any replacement must run on-premises.
Email alone is not the difficult part. We also need shared calendars, room booking, and extensive resource scheduling. The organization has many service vehicles that field engineers must reserve for emergency work, so resource management is especially important.
The office suite is being replaced successfully with EuroOffice, although a few users will still need Microsoft Excel. The main challenge is finding an on-premises product that provides Exchange-like collaboration and booking features. Google-based services are not suitable because the system cannot depend on internet connectivity.
Are there any realistic all-in-one alternatives, or should we expect to combine separate email, calendar, and resource-booking systems?

grommunio could be a strong candidate for an on-premises Exchange-style deployment. IceWarp has also been considered, though its pricing may make it impractical. It is worth comparing licensing, offline operation, calendar interoperability, and resource-booking capabilities rather than focusing only on mail delivery.
Nextcloud is worth evaluating for an on-premises calendar and resource-booking layer, although it would not replace email by itself. A separate mail platform may be necessary, with the two systems integrated as far as practical.
The organization’s lack of internet access does not necessarily eliminate the need to migrate. Future Exchange licensing and support could become significantly more expensive or increasingly dependent on online services, and some organizations are deliberately reducing reliance on software tied to foreign cloud providers.
Exactly. The migration is being considered both because of Exchange’s future availability in a fully offline setup and because the organization wants to reduce dependence on externally controlled software platforms.
If the goal is a completely disconnected environment, there may not be a single drop-in replacement with Exchange’s combination of mail, calendars, rooms, and arbitrary resources. A separate mail system plus a dedicated calendar or booking application may be the more maintainable approach.
Zimbra is one of the more obvious suites to investigate. OpenDesk may also be relevant, depending on the organization’s requirements and support expectations. Neither should be assumed to match every Exchange feature, so room and vehicle booking would need careful testing.

That is one of the likely options if no complete replacement exists. The final product choices are made by another team, but we are trying to identify viable candidates.
