I'm still fairly new to Linux and currently have two Linux machines plus a MacBook. I'm considering buying an extremely cheap second-hand laptop to use as a disposable sandbox for experimenting with Linux, modifying hardware, and learning without worrying about damaging an expensive daily-use computer. I've seen older HP laptops, HP Stream models, Toshiba notebooks, 2015-era MacBook Airs, second-generation Lenovo Yoga 11e systems, and various netbooks for very little money. I probably wouldn't use it as my main computer, but I'd like something that can run Linux reasonably well and has parts that are affordable and not too difficult for a beginner to replace. Are there particular models or hardware families worth looking for, and is this a worthwhile way to learn?

Look at business laptops such as ThinkPads, Dell Latitudes, and HP EliteBooks or ProBooks. They tend to be better built and more Linux-friendly than ultra-cheap consumer models. Check the exact model online before buying, since some inexpensive laptops have poor hardware compatibility or soldered components. HP Stream machines are generally a poor choice because of their limited storage and weak hardware.
An older ThinkPad is probably the safest choice. They’re usually inexpensive, have strong Linux hardware support, and are much easier to open and upgrade than most consumer laptops. Models such as the T440s and similar generations can often accept replacement storage, batteries, keyboards, and sometimes more RAM.
This is a great kind of project because different old laptops teach you different things. Almost anything x86-based can be made to work, but start by checking the model’s Wi-Fi, graphics, and suspend support. If you don’t need portability, an older refurbished mini PC can also offer much better performance for the price and is often easy to experiment with.
For around 4 GB of RAM, a lightweight Linux desktop should be comfortable enough for learning and basic use. Linux Mint is a friendly option, while MX Linux or antiX are better suited to especially old hardware; antiX can even run on very limited 32-bit systems. Before buying anything, try a few distributions in a virtual machine so you can learn safely and get an idea of how much memory and processing power you need. Keep backups and avoid running commands you don’t understand on important systems.
