What compact touchscreen laptop under $1,100 would hold up through law school?

I'm looking for a new laptop costing no more than $1,100 USD. I'm based in Argentina, so refurbished or open-box options aren't practical. My main uses will be typing, reading PDFs, taking notes, and handling long days of law-school classes, with some casual Minecraft on weekends.

The priorities are a durable aluminum or metal chassis, sturdy hinges, a touchscreen, and a compact screen rather than a bulky 16-inch model. It also needs genuinely good battery life for lectures and quiet fans for libraries and silent exams. Local repair and parts availability would be a major advantage, although I'm open to importing something better. I'd also prefer a laptop that looks polished rather than budget-oriented, with extras like fast charging being a nice bonus.

I'm open to Windows, macOS, or another platform, but I'll verify whether my law-school software requires Windows before buying.

First check whether your school requires Windows-specific exam or legal software. If macOS is allowed and you already use an iPhone or iPad, a MacBook Air is worth considering because of the battery life, quiet operation, build quality, and excellent device integration. The main drawback is that it doesn’t have a touchscreen, and larger versions may be less portable or exceed your budget.

For Windows, look at the Microsoft Surface Laptop or Surface Pro configurations that fit your budget. They offer a premium build, touchscreen support, good portability, and a much less budget-like design. Just compare local warranty coverage and remember that some Surface models may require paying extra for accessories.

Lenovo is a good direction if typing comfort matters. The Yoga line gives you the touchscreen and premium feel, while a ThinkPad offers a better keyboard and durability but usually less emphasis on touch and slim design. For either brand, aim for 16 GB of memory and check whether the battery and charger are covered by local service.

The Lenovo Yoga 7 or Yoga 7i is probably one of the best matches. They’re compact convertibles with touchscreens, solid construction, respectable battery life, and enough performance for schoolwork and Minecraft. Availability and exact specifications vary, so prioritize a model with at least 16 GB of RAM.

The Dell XPS 13 is another compact, polished option with strong battery life and a quiet design. Some configurations include touchscreens, but pricing, thermals, and repair availability can vary a lot by country. Compare it directly with the Yoga and Surface models instead of choosing solely based on the XPS name.
