What cooler should I get for a Ryzen 7 9800X3D?

I'm finishing up a few remaining upgrades after moving to an AM5 platform and upgrading my graphics card. My system now uses a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, but it's still paired with a roughly five-year-old Cooler Master cooler. During moderate gaming, the CPU reaches around 80โ€“85ยฐC. I know those temperatures may be normal for this processor, but I'm considering an upgrade anyway. The Peerless Assassin is difficult to find where I live, so I'd appreciate recommendations for comparable air coolers, preferably from DeepCool, ID-Cooling, or another affordable brand. I'm also considering an Arctic Liquid Freezer III 240 Pro, although I'd like to avoid spending more than necessary on an AIO.

Iโ€™m using a Phantom Spirit 120 with the same processor and it handles it without any issues. The DeepCool AK620 G2 is also worth considering if itโ€™s easier to find locally, though fan noise and resonance can vary depending on the unit and fan curve.

The Arctic Freezer 36 is a good alternative to the Peerless Assassin and offers similar performance. Other solid choices include the ID-Cooling FROZN A720, DeepCool AK620, and Be Quiet! Pure Rock 3 Pro. A quality dual-tower air cooler should be plenty for this CPU.

The Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 is probably the closest alternative to the Peerless Assassin and is excellent for the price. The Montech NX600 is another similar option with different fans. If you prefer liquid cooling, an Arctic Liquid Freezer III 280 Pro with a carefully tuned fan and pump curve would be a strong upgrade over a 240 mm model.

Those temperatures are within the normal range for a 9800X3D, since it boosts aggressively until it reaches its thermal limit. Before buying anything, try cleaning the system, replacing the thermal paste, and reseating the cooler. A small negative Curve Optimizer offset can also reduce temperatures and power use; start conservatively and test stability afterward.
