What could be causing my PC to randomly slow to a crawl?

My PC sometimes becomes extremely slow and nearly stops responding. I initially suspected malware, but multiple scans have found nothing. I'm trying to figure out where to start troubleshooting, especially since the manufacturer's warranty has expired. Could failing RAM cause this, or should I focus on the drive, temperatures, background processes, or something else?

Bad RAM more commonly causes crashes, application errors, or blue screens than a PC that simply becomes sluggish. Also check CPU and GPU temperatures, clock speeds, and background services while the problem is occurring. If the hardware checks out, a clean operating system installation could help rule out a damaged or misconfigured Windows setup.

Start by checking Task Manager while the slowdown is happening. If the disk stays near 100% usage, the storage drive could be failing or struggling with background activity. Check its health with a SMART utility such as CrystalDiskInfo, and make sure the operating system drive isnโt nearly full.

Test the memory with MemTest86 or TestMem5. If the test reports errors, disable XMP, EXPO, or any other overclocking setting in the BIOS and test again. Unstable memory settings can look like bad RAM. If the memory passes at default settings, RAM is less likely to be the cause.

MellowCedar42: Thanks, Iโll run a memory test and try again with the memory profile disabled if it finds errors.
