I have an HP Omen 15 laptop. Two days ago, I cleared enough files to free up about 112GB of storage, but now only around 50GB is available again. I've already closed browsers, restarted the laptop, and cleared caches. My previous storage buildup came from editing-software autosaves, but I haven't been using that software recently. Since freeing the space, I've only played a few offline retro games, browsed the web, and downloaded a couple of files. What's the best way to find out what is consuming the missing storage?

Just to clarify the terminology: this sounds like storage space on the SSD, not system memory or RAM. Windows can reclaim RAM dynamically, but a drop in free storage means files have been created or retained somewhere on the drive.
Check whether OneDrive or another sync service is downloading files locally. HP backup tools can also create large backup images. Windows updates, antivirus history, temporary files, and crash dumps are other common causes of sudden storage usage.
If you use classic Outlook, its OST mailbox file is worth checking. It can grow very large, sometimes approaching 50GB, depending on the account and how much mail is cached locally.
First, check the drive with a disk-usage tool such as TreeSize, WinDirStat, or WizTree. These scan the folders and show exactly where the space is being used, which is much more reliable than guessing. The downloads might be larger than expected, but backup software, update files, logs, temporary data, and memory dumps can also grow quickly.
