What CPU and GPU upgrades make sense for a Ryzen 5 1600 and GTX 1070?

My current PC has a Ryzen 5 1600 and a GTX 1070, but newer games such as Star Wars Zero Company are starting to fall below their minimum requirements. I have a laptop with an RTX 4050, but it also struggles and cannot run the game smoothly even at low settings. I would prefer to upgrade rather than build an entirely new system, with a total budget of roughly โ‚ฌ400โ€“โ‚ฌ500. I have a 1440p monitor, although playing at 1080p is fine. What CPU and GPU upgrades would be realistic, and what other componentsโ€”such as the power supply or motherboard BIOSโ€”might need to be checked?

A Ryzen 5 5600 or 5600X is a sensible upgrade if your motherboard supports Ryzen 5000 after a BIOS update. For a little more gaming performance, a Ryzen 5 5500X3D can also be worth considering, especially for 1080p gaming. Check your exact motherboard model and BIOS support before buying.

If buying new, a Ryzen 7 5700X combined with an RX 9060 XT 8GB can sometimes fit close to the upper end of this budget. A 16GB version of the graphics card would be preferable if the price difference is manageable, since newer games are increasingly demanding more VRAM.

BrightMango31: A cheaper Ryzen 5 5600 could leave enough money for a stronger graphics card, so that combination may offer better gaming value if the budget is tight.

Before settling on a GPU, check the power supplyโ€™s wattage, quality, and available PCIe power connectors. A GTX 1070 does not guarantee that the PSU is suitable for a newer card. If it is underpowered or low quality, budget for a reliable replacement as well; that is usually much less expensive than rebuilding the entire PC.

With โ‚ฌ400โ€“โ‚ฌ500 for both parts, Iโ€™d prioritize the GPU and look for a used RTX 3070 or RX 6700 XT, paired with a Ryzen 5 5600 or 5600X. That would be a substantial improvement over the GTX 1070 without replacing the whole system. The best choice depends on local used prices and the games you play.
