What CPU and parts make sense for a reliable productivity PC under $2,000?

I'm building a computer for an older user who mainly needs to keep many browser tabs, spreadsheets, and other office applications open at the same time. He doesn't need gaming-level performance, but I want the system to feel fast, quiet, and dependable for several years. Budget isn't a major concern, though I'd prefer to keep the complete build below $2,000. What CPU and supporting parts would you recommend?

If there’s a convenient bundle deal, a current midrange processor with a motherboard and 32GB of RAM can be excellent value. A compact, quiet build with integrated graphics would be simpler and more pleasant than adding a graphics card that won’t be used. Windows 11 Pro is also worth considering if remote support or business features matter.

Older hardware can already handle this kind of use surprisingly well. A Ryzen 7 3700X with 16GB can manage lots of tabs and office applications, so a current six- or eight-core processor with 32GB of memory will feel very comfortable. You could spend the remaining budget on a nicer case, quieter fans, and a good monitor or backup drive.

For this workload, a Ryzen 7 9700X or Ryzen 9 9900X would provide plenty of performance and leave lots of headroom. Pair it with 32GB of DDR5-6000 memory, a good 1TB or 2TB NVMe SSD, and use integrated graphics unless there’s a specific need for a dedicated GPU.

A small prebuilt-style system such as a Mac mini with 24GB of memory could also handle this workload easily, especially if the user already prefers that operating system. The main advantage is less maintenance, which can save you from becoming the default technical support person for years.
