I currently have an Intel Core i5-12600K paired with a Radeon RX 7900 XTX, but I'm running into CPU bottlenecks in quite a few games. I'm considering a processor upgrade and would appreciate recommendations for a good match for this GPU. I'm using DDR4 memory and would prefer an upgrade that doesn't require much manual tuning to maintain stable temperatures. Would moving to a new motherboard and DDR5 be worthwhile, or is there a sensible drop-in option?

The Core i5-14600K is probably the simplest upgrade for your setup. It works with your existing motherboard and DDR4 memory, and it should pair well with the 7900 XTX. A decent dual-tower air cooler should be enough without requiring much tweaking.
Before choosing, check whether your current board supports 14th-generation processors with a BIOS update. If it does, staying on DDR4 is the most cost-effective route. Moving to DDR5 would mean buying both a new motherboard and memory, so it’s mainly worthwhile if you’re planning a broader platform refresh rather than just solving the CPU bottleneck.
The 14600K makes the most sense if you want to avoid replacing the motherboard and RAM. The Core i7-14700K would provide more performance, but its extra cores also mean more heat and power consumption, so it may require a stronger cooler and more attention to power limits.
That’s what I was wondering—would the 14700K be noticeably harder to keep cool than the 14600K?
