I'm planning to build a new gaming PC and keep my current 2016 desktop as a backup. The old system has a fourth-generation Intel Core i7, a GTX 1080, and 8GB of RAM. For the new build, I'll be gaming at 1440p and 144Hz on a widescreen monitor. I've decided against the RTX 5090 because of its much higher price and can get an RTX 5080 for around €1,100. Since I'm willing to spend on the other components to get the best performance from the 5080, what CPU and platform would be the best match?

A Ryzen 7 9800X3D is the obvious choice if gaming is the priority. If you also plan to do productivity work and want to spend a little less, an Intel Core Ultra 7 270K could be worth considering, though the 9800X3D is the stronger gaming-focused option.
The Ryzen 7 9800X3D would be an excellent pairing. Its strong gaming performance and large 3D V-Cache make it especially well suited to high-refresh-rate gaming, so it should let the RTX 5080 perform without creating much of a CPU bottleneck.
I can’t justify spending €4,000–€5,000 on a 5090, but I’m comfortable investing in the rest of the build if it helps me get the most out of the 5080.
