What CPU Should I Pair With an RTX 5080 for 1440p High-Refresh Gaming?

I'm replacing my 2016 desktop, which currently has a fourth-generation i7, a GTX 1080, and 8GB of RAM. I'll keep the old machine as a backup and build a completely new system. There isn't really a strict budget, but I'm skipping the RTX 5090 because its price is several times higher than the RTX 5080. I can purchase a new RTX 5080 for about €1,100 and plan to play at 1440p and 144Hz on an ultrawide monitor. What CPU and supporting components would pair well with the 5080 without limiting its performance?

The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is an excellent match. Its strong gaming performance and large 3D V-Cache make it especially suitable for high-refresh-rate gaming, and it should let the RTX 5080 perform very well at 1440p.

The 9800X3D would be the straightforward choice for a top-end gaming build. If you also plan to do productivity work and want to reduce the cost somewhat, an Intel Core Ultra 7 270K could be worth considering, although the 9800X3D is the stronger gaming-focused option.

I can’t justify spending €4,000–€5,000 on an RTX 5090, but I’m comfortable paying more for the other components if that helps me get the best performance from the RTX 5080.
