What CPU should I upgrade to with an RTX 4060 and H610 motherboard?

I want to upgrade from my current Intel Core i3-12100F because its 4 cores and 8 threads are starting to feel limiting. My system has an RTX 4060, 32 GB of DDR4-3200 memory, and a Biostar H610MHC 2.0 motherboard. I was considering an i5-14600K, but I'm unsure whether it's a sensible match for this board and graphics card. Would a different processor be a better choice, and would I need a motherboard upgrade for a higher-end CPU?

An i5-13400F or i5-14400F would also be practical choices, assuming the motherboard BIOS is updated first. Check Biostar’s CPU support list and update the BIOS before installing a 14th-generation processor.

A used i5-12600K could be worth considering if you find one cheaply. It performs well, but it still won’t be overclockable on the H610 board, so don’t pay extra just because it has the K designation. A future high-end upgrade may require a better motherboard, especially for power delivery and CPU features.

The i5-14600K is overkill for an RTX 4060, and the K suffix doesn’t offer much benefit because an H610 motherboard doesn’t support CPU overclocking. An i5-12400 or 12400F would already be a strong gaming upgrade, with the RTX 4060 generally becoming the limiting component before the CPU.

The main problem with the i3-12100F is its 4-core, 8-thread design. A 12400F, 13400F, or 14400F would give you more cores and smoother performance without needing to replace the rest of the system. If you do productivity work that uses many cores, the 14400 or 14500 makes more sense; for gaming alone, the 12400F is usually enough.
