I'm very inexperienced with PC hardware and want to upgrade my CPU. My current system uses an H310 motherboard, an LGA 1151 processor platform, 16GB of DDR4-2400 memory, and an RTX 3060. I recently upgraded the graphics card, power supply, and RAM, so I'd like this to be the last major upgrade for a while. My budget is roughly $200–$300 in the United States. I'm looking for a meaningful improvement without buying a processor that would be held back by the rest of my system. Should I upgrade only the CPU, or would replacing the motherboard be worthwhile?

Your current H310 motherboard limits you to 8th- and 9th-generation Intel processors. The strongest drop-in option is generally a Core i9-9900K, while a used i7-9700 may offer a better price-to-performance upgrade. Check motherboard BIOS support and cooling before buying, especially for the i9.
The best choice depends on your goal. A used i7-9700 is the simplest and least expensive upgrade because it works with your current board. Moving to a Ryzen 5 5600 and B550 board costs more but gives you a newer-feeling platform. I would avoid choosing an expensive CPU that requires a motherboard change unless you specifically want the longer-term upgrade path.
For a new platform, a Ryzen 5 5600 paired with a B550 motherboard is a sensible fit for your budget. It would require replacing the motherboard, but it gives you six modern cores and a better upgrade path within the AM4 platform. A setup like that can stay comfortably paired with an RTX 3060 for 1080p gaming.
