What CPU upgrade pairs well with a Radeon 7900 XTX?

I'm currently running an Intel Core i5-12600K with a Radeon RX 7900 XTX, but I'm hitting CPU bottlenecks in quite a few games. I'm considering an upgrade and would like advice on a processor that makes sense for this GPU. My system uses DDR4 memory, so I'm also wondering whether switching to a new motherboard and DDR5 would be worthwhile. I'd prefer a setup that runs at stable temperatures without requiring much manual tuning, since I haven't kept up with PC hardware recently.

Since you already have DDR4, moving to DDR5 would mean buying both a new board and new memory. It can provide more upgrade flexibility later, but it usually isnโ€™t worth the extra cost for this particular upgrade unless youโ€™re also planning a full platform refresh. The 14600K on your current platform is the more cost-effective route.

MellowCedar42: Good to know. I was hoping to avoid replacing everything, so keeping the current board and RAM sounds more appealing.

The Core i5-14600K is probably the simplest and most sensible upgrade. It works with your existing motherboard and DDR4 memory, and a decent dual-tower air cooler should handle it without much trouble. It should also pair well with the 7900 XTX for gaming.

A 14600K gives you a noticeable step up without forcing you to replace the motherboard and RAM. A 14700K is another option if you need more multicore performance, but it produces more heat and will need stronger cooling, so it may not fit your preference for low-maintenance temperatures.

MellowCedar42: Thatโ€™s what I was concerned about with the 14700K. Iโ€™d rather take the easier-to-cool option if the gaming difference isnโ€™t substantial.
