I'm currently using an AMD Ryzen 5 2600 paired with an RTX 3060V2. My setup has been evolving since 2020, and while I know that pretty much any upgrade will be beneficial, I'm looking for something that will last a decent while. Here are the CPUs I'm considering:
- AMD Ryzen 7 5900XT (8 cores, 16 threads) for $287.05
- AMD Ryzen 7 7700X (8 cores, 16 threads) for $379.98
- AMD Ryzen 9 5900XT (16 cores, 32 threads) for $379.99
I appreciate any advice you have on which CPU would be the best fit!

The 7700X is a solid pick but keep in mind that it needs a new motherboard and DDR5 RAM. If that's in your budget, then why not? But if you're tight on cash, maybe look at getting a Ryzen 5800X instead. It’s a nice upgrade for just gaming. By the way, you seem to have listed the 5900XT twice! That’s a good choice if you need it for tasks like video editing since it has a lot of cores.
Yeah, the 5700X is still a great performer. It should work fine for most games even if it doesn’t have the extra cache of the X3D.
Go for the Ryzen 5600 or 5700X to avoid the AM5 costs for now since DDR5 RAM is super pricey. These options will still provide a huge performance boost without breaking the bank.
Just a heads up, if you go for the 7700X, you’ll need a new motherboard and RAM. But it's an excellent CPU. If your budget allows, do it! Otherwise, the Ryzen 5800XT might be what you're after, especially for gaming tasks.
If you're mainly gaming, I’d suggest looking for a used Ryzen 5600 or 5700X. DDR5 prices are crazy right now, so sticking with AM4 could save you some money. I've been running a 5600X and it's handled everything perfectly at 1440p.
Honestly, I don't really do much other than gaming on my PC.
If you can hold off and save a bit more, consider going for an AM5 setup in the future. I'm just saying that while the current AM4 CPUs are fine, investing in something that will be outdated in a couple of years might not be worth it. But hey, if you're looking for something now, definitely stay away from older AM4 options to avoid having to swap it out soon.
Those prices are tough to navigate. I'd suggest the 5800XT over the 5900XT for gaming, plus you may need a new heat sink if your CPU doesn't come with one. Keep in mind you’ll have to update your BIOS if upgrading your CPU too.
If money's getting tight, consider used markets. I've seen 5900XT chips going for about half as much on some sites. And make sure to check what motherboard you currently have!

I can't find a 5700X3D at a good price. Would the 5700X work just as well? I found it for about $236.55.
