What Database and Security Setup Should I Use for a Small First Project?

I'm a beginner with HTML and am building my first real-world project for a friend. The tool would initially run on just one device and is intended to make a task at their job easier. I'm worried about losing data and want advice on choosing a database, protecting the application, handling authentication and authorization, and creating reliable backups. What technology and security approach would be sensible for a small project like this?

Be very cautious about deploying an unfinished tool for someoneโ€™s employer. Authentication, authorization, privacy requirements, auditing, and backups are much harder to get right than they first appear. A mistake could expose company information or cause important records to be lost. It would be safer to build a prototype with sample data first, and have the employer approve and take responsibility for using it. If it becomes a real workplace system, the company should be involved and should fund its development, security review, hosting, and maintenance.

Before choosing a database, decide where the business logic will run. In a traditional client/server design, the browser talks to your application server, and the server validates requests before accessing the database. This generally gives you better control over permissions and data validation. Systems where the browser connects more directly to a hosted database can work, but they require carefully configured database permissions because users may otherwise bypass parts of your intended logic.

HTML alone isnโ€™t enough to build this kind of application; it only describes the page structure. Youโ€™ll also need programming logic, such as JavaScript in the browser and possibly a server-side language. For a single-device project, a local database such as SQLite may be a practical starting point, but you still need to plan regular backups and recovery testing. If the project later becomes shared or moves online, youโ€™ll need a server-side application, controlled database access, authentication, authorization, and encrypted connections.
