I'm looking for a desktop-oriented system that uses as few watts from the wall as possible while still delivering strong performance. My budget is up to £2,000, although I'm willing to spend more for something unusually efficient and capable. CPU performance is the top priority because I run very large audio projects on a Ryzen 9 3900X, so I need at least comparable processing power. A capable GPU would be useful for some gaming, and I currently have an RTX 5060 Ti.
I live off-grid, so total power consumption matters more than usual. Modern Zephyrus laptops have impressed me because they deliver good performance with excellent efficiency, but I'm concerned about laptop longevity, repairs, and upgradeability. Is it possible to get reasonably close to that efficiency with a desktop? I'm also considering using a separate laptop for general low-power work and keeping the desktop mainly for demanding tasks and gaming. Even during basic browsing, my current setup seems to draw around 100 W from the wall.

A laptop will usually remain more efficient because its chips are designed around lower voltage and tighter power limits, but a desktop can get fairly close with sensible component choices, undervolting, and custom power limits. A Ryzen 7 9800X3D paired with an RX 9070 is a strong performance-per-watt combination. With the GPU and CPU tuned, you could potentially keep their combined draw around 225–250 W while giving up roughly 10–15% of gaming performance.
The tuning is important. For example, the Ryzen 7 7700 is generally more efficient than the 7700X because the X model is allowed to use more voltage and power for a relatively small boost-clock advantage. A good motherboard BIOS, conservative limits, and a quality power supply will make a noticeable difference.
You’ll need to define the power budget and performance target more precisely, since maximum performance and minimum wattage pull in opposite directions. A useful approach is to compare complete builds at several fixed limits rather than relying only on stock specifications.
Start with something like a Ryzen 5 9600X or Ryzen 7 9700X, retain the RTX 5060 Ti if it meets your gaming needs, and undervolt both components. A large air cooler can run quietly without using much fan power, while a high-efficiency Platinum-rated PSU operated around its efficient middle range will reduce losses. If low consumption is the absolute priority, lowering the gaming target to 1080p at 60 FPS and using a lower-power GPU will save far more energy than small component optimizations.
An Intel Core Ultra 7 265T could be worth investigating. Its 35 W base power target makes it suitable for compact or always-on systems, though its peak performance is reduced compared with higher-power versions. A low-power CPU paired with a small-form-factor GPU and carefully configured power limits could provide a good balance for your workload, especially if you’re willing to sacrifice some peak gaming performance.

The latest Zephyrus models seem to use Intel Ultra chips and can last around 17 hours during light use. Is there any practical way to get that sort of low-power behavior from a desktop, particularly while browsing? My current PC appears to use roughly 100 W even then.
