I checked my iPhone 12 Pro and its maximum battery capacity is down to 77%. It also says the battery is significantly degraded. Does that mean the phone is in danger of suddenly dying, or is it still safe to use? I can't afford a new phone right now and would like to know what my options are.

The battery can now hold roughly 77% of the charge it held when it was new. Your phone isn’t dangerous or necessarily about to stop working, but you’ll probably notice shorter battery life. At this level, unexpected shutdowns can also become more likely, especially when the battery is low or the phone is under heavy load. Replacing the battery is the usual solution; you don’t need to replace the entire phone.
A battery below 80% is generally considered significantly worn. You can keep using it for now, but plan for a battery replacement when you can. Apple or an authorized repair provider can inspect it and give you the current price. A replacement may be covered only by an applicable warranty or service plan; it isn’t automatically free for every phone.
The warning is about battery performance, not an immediate safety hazard. Until you replace it, keeping the phone charged and carrying a power bank may help. If the battery starts swelling, the screen lifts, the phone gets unusually hot, or you notice a chemical smell, stop using it and have it serviced promptly.
Also, AppleCare or a warranty may cover battery service if the battery falls below the plan’s required capacity, but without coverage you would normally pay the repair fee.
