What does the unlocked padlock on my Windows 11 drive mean?

I'm using a Windows 11 PC with a Samsung SSD. After switching my Windows account from local sign-in to a Microsoft account, I noticed an unlocked padlock icon beside the drive in File Explorer. I believe this is related to BitLocker, but I'm worried that the drive is publicly accessible. What does the icon mean, and how can I make sure the drive is properly protected?

Locking the screen with Windows+L only locks your user session; it doesnโt lock or re-encrypt the drive while Windows is still running. For the strongest protection against someone accessing the physical SSD, shut down the PC rather than leaving it running. Make sure you can find your BitLocker recovery key before changing BitLocker settings or the BIOS.

That icon indicates BitLocker is enabled and the drive is currently unlocked because Windows has started and youโre signed in. It does not mean the drive is public. The system drive normally stays unlocked while Windows is running so your files and applications can be used. It will be protected when the computer is shut down, and you may also be prompted for recovery information after certain hardware or firmware changes.

BitLocker protects data when the drive is powered off or removed and connected to another computer. It doesnโt control whether files are shared over your networkโthat depends on Windows folder and sharing permissions. If you want to check its status, open Manage BitLocker from the Start menu. You can also use the BitLocker settings to back up your recovery key, but keep a copy somewhere separate from the PC.
