What does the unlocked padlock on my Windows 11 SSD mean?

I'm using a Windows 11 PC with a Samsung SSD. After switching my Windows account from a local account to a Microsoft account, I noticed an unlocked padlock icon beside the drive. I believe this is related to BitLocker, but I'm worried that the drive might be publicly accessible. What does the icon mean, and how can I secure the drive properly?

You donโt need to remove the padlock icon. An unlocked padlock is normal while the encrypted drive is in use. If BitLocker is enabled and Windows shows the drive as encrypted, your SSD is protected against someone accessing its contents by taking it out of the PC.

That icon indicates BitLocker is enabled and the drive is currently unlocked because youโre signed in. It doesnโt mean the SSD is public or shared. BitLocker protects the data if someone removes the drive and connects it to another computer; while youโre logged in, Windows has already unlocked it for normal use.

Make sure you have a backup of your BitLocker recovery key somewhere separate from the computer. You can usually find it in your Microsoft accountโs device or recovery-key section, or by searching Windows for โManage BitLockerโ and viewing the recovery-key options. A photo or printed copy can count, as long as the complete key is readable and stored somewhere safe.

BitLocker is mainly protection for data at rest. Other people can only access files through Windows permissions or network-sharing settings. Check the driveโs Sharing and Security tabs if youโre concerned about another account or device accessing specific folders. Locking the screen with Windows+L doesnโt normally lock the BitLocker volume; the drive is generally locked after shutdown or hibernation.
