I'm researching how to deploy a standardized Windows setup for a company with offices in multiple countries. Windows Autopilot seems appealing because devices could be prepared remotely instead of using USB or PXE-based imaging, but I'm unclear about the licensing model.
Some Microsoft 365 plans appear to include the required management features, but only a small portion of our users have those licenses. In most cases, we would simply be preparing a new laptop, and the eventual user would not otherwise need Microsoft 365.
Is there a standalone Autopilot price, such as a monthly tenant fee or a one-time charge per device? Ideally, we would pay per device rather than assign an ongoing license to every user. We already have other endpoint-management tools under contract, so adopting Intune for all its additional features is not currently practical.

It’s worth separating two ideas here: Autopilot is a provisioning workflow, not an imaging replacement. It normally starts with the manufacturer’s standard Windows installation and applies configuration, policies, applications, and account setup from the cloud. If you need to distribute a fully customized golden image, you may still need a deployment product such as Configuration Manager, MDT-style tooling, or a third-party imaging platform.
Some organizations use a standalone Intune license, while others standardize on Business Premium because it also includes identity, security, and endpoint features. Keep in mind that licensing requirements depend on who is enrolling or managing the devices, not simply how many laptops exist. Confirm the current terms with Microsoft or a licensing specialist before purchasing, since the exact Entra and Intune rights can vary by plan.
There usually isn’t a pay-once Autopilot deployment license. The service is tied to the tenant and the licensing rights of the users enrolling and managing the devices. Even if your immediate goal is only provisioning, Intune is what handles enrollment, profiles, applications, and the completion of the user sign-in process.
Autopilot can identify the device and apply its profile, but it isn’t a traditional imaging system. The device still needs the appropriate enrollment and management setup to finish deployment.
