What Gaming PC Can I Get for Around $1,000?

I'm replacing an old non-gaming laptop that overheats almost immediately and want a desktop for heavy gaming. I'd like to play demanding modern games, including modded titles, as smoothly as possible without spending more than roughly $1,000. I care much more about performance and reliability than appearance, so I'm fine with a plain-looking case. I already have a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and I live in the United States. Would I be better off building the PC, buying a prebuilt, or looking for used hardware?

A prebuilt may offer better value around this price than buying every component separately. Look for something with a modern Ryzen 7 or comparable processor, a dedicated graphics card with at least 8GB of VRAM, 16GB of memory, and an SSD. Make sure the listing clearly identifies the power supply, motherboard, storage, and cooling rather than hiding those parts behind vague terms.

One example of the kind of prebuilt to watch for is a system with a Ryzen 7 8700F, Radeon RX 7700 with 16GB of VRAM, 16GB of DDR5 memory, and an SSD. The exact model and price will vary, but those specifications should handle modern games well at 1080p and provide room for mods. Just check the warranty, upgrade options, and power supply before buying.

Before choosing parts, confirm that your $1,000 budget only needs to cover the tower since you already have the accessories. Also check whether you live near a major computer retailer with bundle deals. Prices have risen enough that a new custom build with strong performance for demanding, modded games may be difficult at this budget, so compare prebuilts and used systems too. If buying used, test the computer in person and verify that everything works before paying.

I already have the monitor and peripherals, so I only need the tower. Given the prices, I’m leaning toward comparing prebuilts and used systems instead of building from scratch.

For demanding games with mods, a truly comfortable new build may cost closer to $2,000 or more depending on the graphics card and memory prices. That doesn’t mean you must spend that much, but at around $1,000 you’ll probably need to accept reduced settings, shop sales carefully, or choose a used or discounted prebuilt.

That’s more expensive than I expected, but it helps set realistic expectations. I’ll focus on finding a reliable used or discounted prebuilt rather than forcing a new custom build into the budget.
