What gaming PC should I build with an $800–$1,000 budget?

I'm switching from Xbox to PC and have no experience choosing parts or building a computer. My budget is between $800 and $1,000 USD. I'd mainly play at 1920×1080, including Marvel Rivals, Minecraft, Elden Ring, and Fortnite. Should I build the system myself, or would a prebuilt be a better choice for this budget?

Building it yourself can save money and gives you better control over the parts, but it isn’t as intimidating as it seems. Watch a full build guide that covers every step, and keep a screwdriver handy. PCPartPicker can help prevent compatibility mistakes. An $800–$1,000 budget should be enough for a solid 1080p machine, although you may need to make a few compromises depending on current part prices.

Start by using PCPartPicker to plan the parts and check compatibility while comparing prices. For 1080p gaming, prioritize the graphics card, then choose a sensible midrange CPU, 16GB of RAM, and at least a 512GB SSD. If you can spend about $75 more, a 1TB SSD is worth it because modern games can fill 512GB quickly.

Since you haven’t built a PC before, a prebuilt is a reasonable option. Warehouse clubs and major retailers sometimes have good deals, and a system with a current midrange graphics card, an i5-class processor, 16GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD should handle 1080p gaming well. Just compare the exact components and make sure the power supply and cooling are decent.

A prebuilt with a modern midrange GPU and a 1TB SSD may offer better value than buying every component separately right now. It’s also the simplest route if you want to start gaming immediately. Before buying, check that it uses standard, upgradeable parts rather than a proprietary motherboard or power supply.
