What GPU offers the best value under $800 right now?

My EVGA RTX 3080 died about a year after its warranty expired, so I need a replacement in a very rough GPU market. I'm in the US and don't have any nearby computer stores, so I'll be buying online. My budget is $800 maximum, although spending closer to $650 would be preferable.

I've seen the RX 9070 XT praised as the current value leader, but many recommendations seem to be based on prices before the latest increases. The RX 9070 GRE is around $540, the RX 9070 about $660, and the RX 9070 XT roughly $730. Since the GRE costs about 75% as much as the XT, I'm wondering whether its performance is also close enough to make it worthwhile. The RTX 5070 Ti is often described as Nvidia's price-to-performance sweet spot, but I haven't found one below $900.

I mostly play older games at 4K, although I may move to 1440p. My system has a Ryzen 5 5600X and 16GB of DDR4-3600 memory. I'm concerned that a modern high-end card could be limited by the CPU, and I'm also wary of buying another power-hungry GPU after my 3080 failed. Used cards are an option, but prices don't seem much lower, and I'm nervous about spending $400 or more on a card that may have been used for mining and could fail soon. What are the best-value new or used options at these prices?

If you find a used RX 9070 XT around $450–$600 from a seller who can demonstrate that it works, that could be an excellent deal, but I wouldn’t pay nearly-new pricing for a used card. Older options such as a used RTX 4070 Super or 4070 Ti can also be reasonable around $450–$500, although the 12GB models are less appealing for long-term 4K use. A used 7900 XTX is worth considering for pure 4K rasterized gaming, but only if it’s priced well and the seller provides some return protection.

For used hardware, a return window and proof of normal temperatures are more valuable than claims about whether the card was used for mining. Mining use alone doesn’t guarantee failure, but buying without any buyer protection is the bigger risk.

At current pricing, the RX 9070 XT is the easiest recommendation if you’re comfortable spending the full budget. It offers performance close to the RTX 5070 Ti in regular gaming, has 16GB of VRAM, and is generally much better value when the Nvidia card is selling for $900 or more. For 4K and older games, it should be a substantial upgrade over the 3080. Just compare prices carefully, since a sale can change the answer from one day to the next.

I’d only choose the 5070 Ti instead if you specifically need Nvidia features such as CUDA or stronger ray-tracing performance. At a $200–$300 premium, it isn’t a good general gaming value compared with the 9070 XT.

Don’t assume that high power consumption directly means a card will fail sooner. Component quality, temperatures, voltage, and simply bad luck matter more than the wattage number alone. A reputable RX 9070 XT model with a decent cooler and good airflow should be fine, though you should check its length, thickness, power connectors, and your power supply before ordering. Avoid especially cramped two-slot designs if noise is a concern.

The RTX 5070 is the more sensible Nvidia option if you find one around $600, but it generally gives up performance and VRAM compared with the 9070 XT. I wouldn’t stretch to a $900-plus 5070 Ti for this build unless you specifically need CUDA, Nvidia’s software ecosystem, or better ray tracing. Otherwise, save the difference and put it toward a later platform upgrade when prices and memory availability improve.

The RX 9070 GRE can make sense if keeping the cost down matters more than maximizing performance. It appears to deliver roughly three-quarters of the XT’s performance in many games, so a price around 75% of the XT is fairly reasonable. The XT is still the better long-term 4K choice because of its extra performance and 16GB of VRAM, but the GRE may be a better fit if you’re moving to 1440p or want to leave money available for a future CPU or memory upgrade.

Your Ryzen 5 5600X could limit frame rates in some 1440p games, especially if you’re targeting very high refresh rates. At 4K, the GPU will usually be the limiting component, so the XT would still have plenty of room to perform.
