What GPU should I buy for 1080p esports and 1440p gaming with an £800 budget?

I'm choosing a GPU mainly for gaming, with a budget of up to around £800 in England. For competitive games such as Rainbow Six Siege, Counter-Strike 2, Marvel Rivals, and League of Legends, I want to play at 1080p native resolution and reach at least 200 FPS where possible. I'm avoiding frame generation because I don't want the additional input latency. I'll also use a 1440p 180Hz display for story-focused games. I'm less concerned about extremely high frame rates there, but around 120 FPS at native resolution would be ideal. I'd be more willing to use upscaling in those games if necessary. What GPU would be the best choice, and how much should I prioritize the CPU for competitive gaming?

At this budget, the Radeon RX 9070 XT is probably the strongest option, with the RX 9070 also worth considering if it’s substantially cheaper. It should handle 1440p very well and has plenty of performance for native-resolution gaming. Compare pricing and reviews between different models, and make sure the card and power supply use sensible power connectors.

For competitive games at 1080p and 200+ FPS, the CPU is often the limiting factor rather than the GPU. Put together a balanced system with a strong gaming CPU, then choose a solid mid-to-high-end GPU instead of spending the entire budget on graphics. The 9070 or 9070 XT would be more than adequate for the GPU side.

Upscaling and frame generation are separate features. Upscaling renders the game internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the image, while frame generation creates additional frames and can add latency. If your concern is input lag, you can still use upscaling in slower-paced 1440p games while leaving frame generation disabled.

For the esports titles you listed, getting a high-end GPU alone probably won’t guarantee 200 FPS because those games can be heavily CPU-bound at 1080p.
