I've been gradually upgrading my PC over the past year and now the graphics card is the last major part left. My system has a Ryzen 7 5800X3D, 32 GB of DDR4 memory, and a GTX 1080. I'm planning to play at 1440p, so almost any modern card should be a huge upgrade. My GPU budget is around $1,000. Which graphics cards would make the most sense for this setup and use case?

For gaming, the Radeon RX 9070 XT is probably the strongest option under $1,000 right now. It offers performance close to the RTX 5070 Ti, has 16 GB of VRAM, and is usually several hundred dollars cheaper. Your 5800X3D should pair well with it at 1440p without being a major bottleneck.
I upgraded from a 2080 Super to a 9070 XT with a 5800X3D and have been very happy at 1440p. Most games run around 100–144 FPS on high settings, with the biggest exceptions being particularly demanding or poorly optimized titles. The 5800X3D handled the card well in that experience.
The regular RX 9070 is worth considering too. It has the same 16 GB of VRAM, uses less power, and performs surprisingly close to the XT model while costing less. If the price difference is meaningful, the standard 9070 may provide better value.
The RTX 5070 Ti is also a reasonable choice if you care about ray tracing, Nvidia features, local machine-learning workloads, or software support. It costs more and generally isn’t as good a gaming value as the 9070 XT, but some people may prefer Nvidia’s drivers and feature set. For straightforward rasterized gaming, I’d still lean toward AMD.
