What GPU Upgrade Makes Sense for My PC and $500–800 Budget?

I'm planning to upgrade my gaming PC and would appreciate some advice. I currently have an RTX 3050 8GB and an Intel Core i5 12th-generation processor, but the 3050 is struggling in some games. I'm considering a used RTX 3060 12GB, though I'm unsure whether buying a secondhand graphics card is worthwhile. I may also upgrade the CPU, depending on what makes the most sense. My current case cannot fit a triple-fan graphics card, but I'm willing to replace it if the performance benefit is significant. I'd like the system to remain useful for about two years before making another major upgrade. My budget is roughly $500–800, including any necessary upgrades.

The exact case model and power supply are important before choosing a card. Measure the maximum GPU length and check the power-supply wattage and connectors. With an $800 budget, replacing the case is reasonable if it opens up better GPU options, but a triple-fan design is not automatically faster than a compact version of the same GPU.

A used graphics card can be a good purchase if the price is right. Test it under load if possible, check that the fans work normally, watch for overheating or artifacting, and avoid cards with obvious physical damage or signs of mining abuse. If there is no return period, the discount should be large enough to justify the extra risk.

An RTX 3060 12GB would be an improvement over the 3050, but it may not be a large enough jump to justify spending heavily. Your 12th-generation i5 is probably fine for gaming, so I would prioritize the graphics card rather than upgrading the CPU right now. Look for a newer or faster GPU within the budget if pricing allows.

That makes sense. I was mainly considering the 3060 because the extra VRAM seemed useful, but I’ll compare its price against newer cards before deciding.
