What GPU upgrade would make sense for my RTX 3060 Ti build?

My gaming PC is turning four years old: an RTX 3060 Ti, Ryzen 5 5600X, and 32GB of RAM. It has served me really well, and I can still play everything I want, although newer games such as Monster Hunter Wilds usually don't maintain a stable 60 FPS. I mainly play at 1920×1080 and haven't moved to 1440p or 4K yet. I probably won't upgrade for another couple of years, but I'd like to understand what kind of GPU—and possibly CPU—would be a worthwhile upgrade when the time comes.

At 1080p, the 3060 Ti is still plenty capable, so I wouldn’t rush to replace it. The main limitation in newer games is likely the 8GB of VRAM, which can cause hitching when textures exceed the available memory. When you eventually upgrade, prioritize a card with substantially more VRAM rather than buying a small performance step up. The best choice will depend heavily on prices and new releases at that time.

Your AM4 platform still has some useful upgrade options. A Ryzen 7 5700X3D, or another compatible X3D chip if you find one at a good price, can improve minimum FPS and reduce CPU bottlenecks. Pairing that with a future RX 9070-class card would be a strong upgrade, although at 1080p the GPU benefit may vary depending on whether you’re GPU- or CPU-limited. A used RTX 3080 could also be a temporary step up, but its 10GB of VRAM makes it less attractive as a long-term purchase.

If you wanted to upgrade soon, cards around the RTX 5070 or Radeon RX 9070 class would provide a noticeable improvement. The RX 9070 has particularly strong traditional rendering performance and plenty of VRAM, while the RTX 5070 adds Nvidia’s newer upscaling and frame-generation features. Whether either one is worth the money depends on the price difference and the games you play.
QuietWalrus8: I went from a 3060 Ti to an RTX 5070 and the performance increase was substantial. The newer Nvidia features were also a nice bonus, especially since the upgrade only cost me roughly $200 after selling the old card.

MellowCedar42: That makes sense. I do like the 3060 Ti, so I’d rather wait for a genuinely worthwhile jump than replace it just because it’s getting older.
