I currently use an RTX 3080 Ti with a Ryzen 9 9950X3D, but I've noticed a few signs that my graphics card may be starting to fail. I'm not planning to replace it immediately, but I'd like to know which GPUs would be meaningful upgrades if it does need to be replaced.
I mainly play at 4K. AMD cards seem to offer better performance per dollar, particularly the Radeon RX 9070 XT, while Nvidia's RTX 5070 Ti and higher-end options have features like DLSS and generally stronger ray tracing. Since many modern games are poorly optimized, upscaling can make a noticeable difference, so I'm unsure whether it would be sensible to give up DLSS for AMD's better value.
Would an RX 9070 XT or RTX 5070 Ti be a worthwhile upgrade from my 3080 Ti, or would I need something like an RTX 5080 to see a significant improvement?

I’d lean toward the RX 9070 XT. It has roughly comparable traditional rendering performance to the RTX 5070 Ti, while often costing considerably less. FSR has also improved enough that it shouldn’t automatically rule out an AMD card, especially if you care more about value than ray tracing.
For a clearly noticeable upgrade, an RTX 5080 or better would be the safer choice. A 9070 XT or 5070 Ti can still be worthwhile for the extra VRAM and newer features, but the performance increase over a 3080 Ti may not feel dramatic in every game.
For 4K, I’d shortlist the RX 9070 XT, RTX 5070 Ti, and RTX 5080. The 9070 XT is the value pick, while the 5070 Ti is worth considering if it’s within about 15% of the AMD card’s price and you specifically want DLSS or stronger ray tracing. The standard 5070 isn’t enough of a generational leap to justify replacing a functioning 3080 Ti.
The RX 9070 XT and RTX 5070 Ti are probably the minimum options that make sense as an upgrade. The regular RTX 5070 generally isn’t a large enough jump from a 3080 Ti, especially for 4K gaming.
If the two higher-end cards are close in price, Nvidia’s ray tracing and DLSS features can justify choosing the 5070 Ti. Otherwise, the 9070 XT offers much better value and strong 4K raster performance.
