What Happens If I Resign During a 12-Month Probation Period?

I'm about to start a Software Engineer role at a company with a 12-month probation period, but I'm also interviewing elsewhere. If I receive a better offer within the next four or five months, I may decide to move on. How is resignation usually handled during probation? Would I likely be released immediately, or would I still need to complete the two-month notice period? Can I ask to work the full notice period rather than leave immediately? I'd also appreciate advice on how to discuss this professionally with my manager and HR, along with experiences from anyone who has dealt with a similar situation.

The answer depends on the employment contract and local labor rules, not just the fact that you’re on probation. Check the sections covering resignation, notice periods, and early release first. Some companies have a shorter notice period during probation, while others apply the same two-month period. If the contract allows the company to release you earlier, they may do that, but you can still ask whether they would prefer you to complete the notice period for a smoother handover. Once you have another offer, speak honestly and professionally with your manager and HR, give formal notice, and offer to document your work and transition your responsibilities. It’s also worth confirming the policy with the prospective employer before making a decision.

That makes sense. I was mainly trying to understand the usual practice before joining, but I’ll make sure to review the actual contract and ask the prospective employer about their expectations as well.
