I'm replacing most of my nearly decade-old Windows 10 gaming desktop, but the old system is still usable enough to give to family. I want to keep the old SSD temporarily because it's aging and I need to recover files from it. The result would be computer A with a new SSD and the old hardware, and computer B with the new hardware plus the old SSD containing my current Windows installation. What would happen if I booted both systems this way? Would either installation start normally, and where is the Windows license actually tied? If something needs to be reinstalled or reactivated, what is the simplest legitimate way to get both computers working without unnecessarily buying another license? I'd also like to keep Windows 10 if possible. Finally, aside from files on the old SSD, would any useful data or settings remain on computer A?

Activation depends on the type of license. A retail license can generally be transferred to replacement hardware, usually by linking it to a Microsoft account and using the activation troubleshooter, though it should only be active on one computer at a time. An OEM license that came with a prebuilt system is normally tied to that original motherboard and usually cannot be transferred. Replacing only the SSD generally does not change the license’s ownership, but moving the installation to a new motherboard may trigger reactivation. Check the license type before deciding which machine should receive it.
Computer A would retain whatever is physically on its existing components, such as firmware settings, installed expansion-card configuration, and possibly data on any drives you leave connected. It will not retain the Windows installation, applications, browser profiles, or documents that were stored on the removed SSD. Copy the important files from the old SSD to a separate backup before experimenting, then install Windows on the new SSD and reinstall applications as needed.
The Windows installation and your personal files are on the SSD, while the firmware and some hardware identification live on the motherboard. Computer A’s new SSD will not contain your old Windows installation or user data unless you copy or clone it there. Computer B may boot from the old SSD, but old drivers and hardware-specific configuration can cause problems after the hardware swap. Back up the SSD first, then install Windows cleanly on the new hardware and copy your files over. The old computer can then be given its own clean installation if needed.
Windows often can boot after a motherboard and CPU change, but it may need to install new drivers, reactivate, or require network drivers to be installed manually. Staying on the same CPU platform, such as AMD-to-AMD or Intel-to-Intel, can improve the odds, but it is not guaranteed. A clean installation is the most reliable approach, especially when moving an existing installation to substantially different hardware.

A clean install on both systems is the least risky option if the goal is two dependable computers. Trying to make one existing installation serve two very different hardware configurations can leave driver and activation problems, and it is especially risky before the files have been backed up.
