I'm planning to build a new PC soon, but my last build was an i5-3570K system from around 2012. I remember having to manually install motherboard and graphics drivers, configure memory and FSB settings, and troubleshoot fan-control software after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10. For a modern Windows PC, do I still need to download every driver manually from the motherboard and GPU manufacturers? You don’t need to use a fan hub unless your case has more fans than the motherboard can power or you specifically want a controller for lighting. Most case fans plug into motherboard headers, and the BIOS can regulate them based on CPU or motherboard temperature. Some proprietary fan systems use their own hub and software, so check the connector type before buying parts.
The biggest practical change is that modern hardware does far more setup automatically. You generally install the operating system, apply updates, install the important chipset and GPU drivers, enable the memory profile, and then verify temperatures and fan behavior.
Fan control is much less dependent on Windows software than it used to be. CPU and case fans can usually be connected directly to the motherboard’s CPU_FAN and SYS_FAN headers, then configured with temperature-based curves in the UEFI/BIOS. That control works before Windows starts and doesn’t require a utility running in the background.
You can use motherboard software for extra features such as RGB lighting, but it isn’t normally necessary for basic fan speeds. If you want Windows-based control, independent tools such as Fan Control are generally more flexible than the old vendor utilities.
A typical modern installation is: assemble everything, update the motherboard firmware if needed, install Windows from a USB drive, let Windows finish its initial drivers and updates, then install the motherboard chipset/network drivers and the latest GPU driver. After that, check the BIOS for XMP or EXPO and set your fan curves.
A board with BIOS Flashback is useful because it can update firmware from a USB stick, sometimes even without a CPU installed. M.2 SSDs also make installation cleaner because they usually need no separate data or power cables—just be careful not to lose the tiny mounting screw.
For a normal build, there’s no need to manually overclock or configure old-style FSB settings. Just leave CPU settings at their defaults unless you specifically want to tune the system. Enabling XMP or EXPO is technically an overclocked memory profile, but it’s a standard one-click setting supported by current platforms.
It’s also worth checking that the motherboard firmware supports your chosen CPU before assembling everything, and downloading the network driver ahead of time in case Windows doesn’t recognize the adapter immediately.
The setup process is generally much easier now. Windows will install basic drivers for networking, audio, storage, and USB devices automatically, but it’s still a good idea to install the latest chipset and graphics drivers yourself. For the motherboard, use the manufacturer’s support page for the chipset, Wi-Fi or LAN, and audio drivers. For the graphics card, use the GPU manufacturer’s official driver package or app.
You normally don’t need to adjust FSB settings anymore. Modern platforms handle that automatically. In the firmware settings, the main memory-related step is enabling XMP or EXPO so the RAM runs at its advertised speed. Memory training also happens automatically during startup.
