An external USB model is probably the simplest choice if you don’t want to install anything internally.

For game preservation, look at the disc capacity you need rather than the kind of files you’re storing. Data discs can hold ordinary files, including game images; they aren’t restricted to audio. A dual-layer Blu-ray writer and matching dual-layer blank discs will give you considerably more space than standard CDs or DVDs.

Make sure the drive specifically supports Blu-ray if you want to read or write anything beyond CDs and DVDs. Blu-ray is used by systems such as the PlayStation 3 and Xbox One, as well as high-definition movies. If you expect to handle 4K content, choose a drive that supports UHD Blu-ray rather than assuming every Blu-ray drive can read it.
