I'm a graphic design student and photographer looking to buy my own scanner before graduating. I need to digitize sketches, collages, paintings, photo prints, film negatives, and some experimental physical pieces. Most items will be smaller than letter size, and the scanner only needs to be portable enough to move between my apartment and my hometown by car. Image quality and accurate color matter most, especially for photographs and negatives, although I'm not looking for absolute perfection. I usually scan at 300 dpi and sometimes 600 dpi for larger print projects. I have plenty of storage, so file size isn't a major concern. What type of scanner should I look for?

Don’t assume a higher dpi number automatically means better scans. For documents, 300 dpi is plenty, but photos and artwork may benefit from 600 dpi, and film often needs much higher optical resolution if you plan to enlarge it. Pay attention to the scanner’s true optical resolution, color depth, and whether the software lets you turn off automatic sharpening and color corrections. Standalone flatbeds from established manufacturers are generally safer than office multifunction machines, which are often optimized for text rather than accurate color.
A flatbed scanner with a transparency unit is probably the best fit. Look for a dedicated model rather than an all-in-one printer, with adjustable resolution, good color depth, and holders for film. A letter-size bed will cover most of your artwork, while the transparency adapter will handle negatives and slides. Dedicated film scanners can produce better results for negatives, but they’re less useful for paintings and prints, so a flatbed with a film attachment is the more versatile choice.
Color accuracy will depend on your entire workflow, not just the scanner. Calibrate your monitor if possible, scan with a neutral or professional color setting, and expect to make some adjustments afterward. For textured paintings or watercolor paper, one useful technique is to scan the piece in several orientations and combine the images in editing software. Paper shadows and texture change with the lighting direction, while the artwork stays consistent, which can help reduce unwanted texture. A film-specific scanner may still be worth considering later if negatives become a major part of your work.

Portability isn’t a big issue beyond being able to carry it to my car every few weeks. I’m mainly focused on getting good results with photos and negatives, and I’m comfortable processing the files afterward.
