What Linux distribution can run on an old Chromebook with very limited storage?

I have an old Dell laptop or Chromebook that was going to be discarded, and ChromeOS reports roughly 1 GB of available storage. I'd like to install Linux if possible. Which lightweight distribution would fit, and are there any hardware or bootloader issues I should check first?
Answers
If the machine really has extremely limited storage, lightweight options include Tiny Core Linux, Damn Small Linux, Puppy Linux, and antiX. They may boot and run, but the experience will be very limited, especially with modern websites. A lightweight browser will work better than Chrome.

If possible, upgrading or replacing the internal storageโor installing the system on an SD card or USB driveโwould give you far more choices. With only about 1 GB available, keeping ChromeOS may actually be more practical unless the storage can be expanded.

First, make sure that 1 GB is actually the total storage and not just the remaining free spaceโor possibly the amount of RAM. Most Chromebooks have more storage than that. Check the exact model and capacity before choosing a distribution.

Because this appears to be a Chromebook, compatibility is just as important as the distro size. Many models have a locked bootloader or require special firmware changes before another operating system can be installed. Research the exact model first, and be prepared for the possibility that Linux cannot be installed easily.

VelvetMaple42: ChromeOS shows about 196 MB in use and around 1.8 GB available, so I may have misunderstood the deviceโs total capacity. Iโll check the exact model and whether the storage can be upgraded.
