What motherboard and CPU cooler should I pair with a Ryzen 7 5800X3D?

I just bought a Ryzen 7 5800X3D and already have 32GB of DDR4 memory, so I'm staying on the AM4 platform rather than switching to AM5. I've heard the 5800X3D can run fairly warm and want recommendations for a reliable, reasonably priced motherboard and CPU cooler. I'm not looking for high-end partsโjust something that will support the processor properly without overspending.

Since you already own 32GB of DDR4 and were upgrading from a Core i7-9700K, the 5800X3D makes much more sense than it would for someone starting from scratch. If you didnโt already have the memory, AM5 would offer a better future upgrade path, but changing platforms would add the cost of new RAM and a motherboard.

A decent B550 motherboard is all you need. You donโt have to spend a lot, but Iโd avoid the absolute cheapest models. The MSI B550 Tomahawk is a solid choice, though there are plenty of comparable boards from other manufacturers. X570 also works, but it usually isnโt necessary unless you specifically need its extra connectivity.

Check motherboard reviews for VRM quality, BIOS support, and the features you actually need rather than focusing only on the chipset name. Any reputable B550 board with confirmed Ryzen 5000 support should handle the 5800X3D without trouble. Also make sure your case has reasonable airflow, since even a good CPU cooler needs cool air moving through the system.

For the cooler, a Thermalright Peerless Assassin or Phantom Spirit is more than enough. The AK620 is another good option if itโs cheaper where you live. The 5800X3D can report relatively high temperatures because of how the extra cache is stacked on the chip, but it doesnโt require an expensive liquid cooler.

SilverMaple31: It can run warm because heat has a harder time leaving the chip, but a larger cooler has less of an effect than it would on a conventional CPU. Thatโs why one of these affordable dual-tower air coolers is still a sensible recommendation.
