If I wanted a PC that delivered a similar experience to a PS5 or Xbox Series console—especially at 4K on a large TV with smooth frame rates—what CPU and GPU would be a realistic target? How much difference does console-specific optimization, fixed hardware, the operating system, and features such as dedicated decompression hardware make? Could a PC with theoretically similar components perform noticeably worse in the same game, or would adjustable settings let it match or exceed the console experience?

There isn’t one universal PC equivalent because consoles use dynamic resolution, custom memory arrangements, dedicated hardware, and carefully chosen presets. A console may render internally below 4K and reconstruct the image, so comparing it with a PC running native 4K at the same nominal quality can be misleading. The fairest comparison is to test the same game with similar visual settings and the same frame-rate target, not to compare TFLOPS alone.
For a modern PC intended to match or comfortably exceed a base PS5, I’d look beyond the exact console-equivalent parts: something like a Ryzen 5 5600 or newer paired with an RX 6700 XT, RX 7700 XT, RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 3080, or RTX 4070 depending on resolution, ray tracing, and desired frame rate. At 4K, the GPU matters much more, and matching a console’s output on a TV also depends on upscaling, frame-rate targets, VRR, and the display itself.
If the goal is simply to play at a similar quality level, a Ryzen 5 3600-class CPU and an RX 6700 or RTX 2070-class GPU are reasonable baseline comparisons. However, a PC with those parts may require some tuning, while the console’s settings are selected automatically. A slightly faster modern CPU and GPU will usually provide a more consistent experience and give you room for higher frame rates or better ray tracing.
For the base PS5, the usual real-world PC comparison is an RX 6700 non-XT, RX 5700 XT, RTX 2070, or RTX 2070 Super, depending on the game and settings.
