What Projects Should I Include in My Developer Portfolio?

I'm trying to build my portfolio as I'm studying to be a full stack developer, but I'm not sure what kinds of projects would really showcase my skills. Right now, my portfolio is mostly empty except for some class projects, which I don't think truly represent my abilities. I'm looking for guidance on what types of projects I should aim for and I'm open to trying anything!

Think about building something based on your unique knowledge or experiences. I developed a journaling app that uses AI to offer emotional reflections, which I found really resonated with interviewers. It combined my academic knowledge and real-world experience and was a great conversation starter.

Don't underestimate the power of addressing everyday annoyances. Iโve seen great portfolios built around simple projects that fix minor issues. Itโs not about being flashy; it's about showing your thought process and how you handle edge cases and unexpected scenarios!

I've seen many portfolios that really stand out when they feature smaller tools that solve a personal problem. For instance, I created a lightweight dashboard to track my workouts, and it really helped me in interviews. You don't have to build huge apps; focus on things that reflect your interests and problem-solving skills. Once you get closer to job hunting, consider platforms that connect you with companies looking for practical projects.

Contributing to an open-source project can be a fantastic way to showcase your skills. You'll learn how to work with a larger codebase and gain valuable feedback from experienced developers. Try to choose a project that you personally find useful; it can keep you motivated and engaged.
