I'm looking for a dependable UPS under $150 for my gaming computer. My current CyberPower 950VA unit is about four years old and has been replaced twice, but it still shuts off almost immediately or within 30 seconds during a power interruption, even though its software reports the battery as fully charged and shows a 31% load of roughly 163 watts. During a recent distant lightning strike, my computer rebooted even though the lights, television, and fan in the house stayed on. My system has an Intel i7-10700K, RTX 3070, 64GB of RAM, several SSDs, an HDD, and an MSI Z490 motherboard. I also sometimes run a space heater in the same room, though it is plugged directly into the wall rather than the UPS. What UPS would be reliable for this setup, and is my current unit failing because of its battery, limited output, or the circuit itself?

A four-year-old sealed lead-acid UPS battery can be worn out even if the software says it is 100% charged. That reading usually reflects voltage, not how much energy the battery can actually deliver under load. Replacing the battery may fix the short runtime, although repeated replacements are a good reason to consider APC or Eaton instead.
Check the UPS’s actual watt rating rather than relying only on the VA number. A 950VA model may have only about 510 watts of usable output, and an RTX 3070 system can produce brief power spikes that cause a small or aging UPS to shut down. A pure-sine-wave model with adequate wattage would be a safer choice for this computer, but getting 15 minutes of runtime under gaming load for less than $150 may be unrealistic.
The lightning-related reboot may have been a very brief voltage drop or disturbance that the UPS did not handle properly. Since the computer rebooted while other appliances stayed on, the UPS battery, transfer behavior, or output waveform could be involved. Make sure the computer is connected to the UPS’s battery-backed outlets, not just surge-only outlets.
Do not plug the space heater into the UPS. A heater commonly draws around 800–1,500 watts, while a 950VA UPS may only be rated for roughly 510 watts of output. Even when the heater is connected directly to the wall, running it on the same circuit as a gaming PC can trip the breaker. The UPS cannot prevent an overloaded household circuit from shutting off.
A lithium-iron-phosphate UPS can offer longer battery life and avoid the usual three-to-five-year sealed-lead-acid replacement cycle. Regardless of the model, keep the heater and other high-wattage appliances on a separate circuit or avoid running them while gaming, and choose a unit whose continuous watt rating comfortably exceeds the computer’s peak draw.

The heater was connected to the wall outlet, not the UPS. It can still overload the room’s circuit if the computer and heater are drawing power from the same branch.
