What Ryzen CPU should I pair with a Radeon 9070 XT?

I'm rebuilding my prebuilt PC in a new case and planning a few upgrades. So far, I've added another NVMe SSD and replaced my MSI RTX 3070 with a PowerColor Radeon 9070 XT. I'm currently using an Intel Core i7-11700KF and suspect it may be limiting the new graphics card in some games. I'm considering moving to Ryzen and would like a strong gaming CPU without spending more than necessary. Would a Ryzen 7 chip be enough, or is a Ryzen 9 actually worthwhile? I'm also wondering whether I should use an AIO or custom water cooling for my first proper build, or just stick with air cooling. I'll also be replacing the motherboard and moving to AM5, so recommendations for a sensible CPU, motherboard, and memory upgrade would be appreciated.

AM4 options such as a 5600X3D or 5800X3D can be good value in an existing DDR4 system, but they wouldn’t make much sense as an upgrade from an 11700KF. Since you’re already replacing the motherboard, AM5 is the better long-term platform. A more budget-conscious build could use a Ryzen 5 9600X or a Ryzen 7 7700-class chip with affordable DDR5, while a 7800X3D or 9800X3D is better if you want maximum gaming performance. For cooling, a good air cooler is simple and reliable. An AIO is optional for appearance or extra cooling, but custom water cooling is unnecessarily complicated for a first build.

For gaming, you definitely don’t need a Ryzen 9. A Ryzen 7 7800X3D, 9800X3D, or a newer equivalent would be an excellent match, depending on current pricing. The X3D chips are especially strong in games, while something like a Ryzen 7 7700X or 9700X makes more sense if you also do heavier productivity work. If the 9800X3D is only a little more expensive than the alternative where you live, it’s a reasonable choice for a high-end gaming build.

The 11700KF is still a capable gaming CPU, so I’d confirm that you’re actually CPU-limited before replacing the platform. Use a monitoring tool to check CPU and GPU utilization while playing the games where performance seems low. A faster monitor or higher resolution may also help you get more value from the 9070 XT. Since this came from a prebuilt, check the power supply carefully too—the 9070 XT deserves a quality unit with enough wattage and the proper power connectors. Moving to AM5 also means buying a new motherboard and DDR5 memory.

MellowKite42: I left out some details because I’m still learning. I am planning to move to an AM5 motherboard and meant Ryzen 7 rather than Ryzen 9. I’m leaning toward the 9800X3D since it doesn’t cost much more than the next option, and I’d like to leave some room for future upgrades.
