I've used Windows for years, so hardware compatibility was never something I had to think much about. For my next build, I'm planning to switch to Linux, probably Linux Mint, and I'm wondering whether there are any components I should specifically seek out or avoid. Are there parts that don't work properly on Linux, and do I need to check driver support for everything before buying? I already have an RTX 3080—can I reuse it, or would an AMD graphics card be a better choice? I'm not particularly interested in RGB lighting, though I do use a Logitech mouse with macros that are saved to the mouse's internal memory.

RGB and vendor-specific peripheral software are often less reliable than the hardware itself. Manufacturer utilities for lighting, fan control, keyboard macros, and similar features may not have Linux versions. Community tools can cover some devices, but compatibility varies, so avoiding unnecessary RGB hardware and checking peripherals in advance is a good idea.
The components that deserve the most attention are usually the graphics card, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth adapter, and any unusual peripherals. Storage, memory, CPUs, and ordinary motherboard features are rarely a problem on current hardware. Before buying, search for Linux reports for the exact motherboard and wireless chipset, and check whether the manufacturer’s control software is required for any features you care about.
The 3080 should work, although NVIDIA setup can occasionally require troubleshooting, especially with multiple monitors, suspend, or certain desktop sessions. AMD is generally the easier choice if you’re buying a new card specifically for Linux, but keeping the 3080 is perfectly reasonable if it already meets your performance needs.
Most of the core hardware should work without much trouble. Modern motherboards and CPUs generally have good Linux support, and your RTX 3080 is usable. The main extra step is installing NVIDIA’s proprietary driver; Mint provides a driver manager, and some other distributions offer the option during installation. AMD graphics cards tend to be more straightforward because their drivers are better integrated into the Linux kernel and desktop stack, but you don’t need to replace the 3080 just to run Linux.

That’s helpful. I don’t care about RGB at all, and I’ve already saved my Logitech mouse macros to the mouse’s internal memory. I may need a Windows installation with the manufacturer software to change them later, but that isn’t a major concern.
