I spilled a glass of wine on my Samsung Galaxy Book 3, and it shut off immediately. I unplugged it, wiped it down, turned it upside down, used compressed air, and left it in rice for about 12 hours. I'm worried both the laptop and the rice may be beyond saving. Should I open the laptop and clean it with isopropyl alcohol, or is the immediate shutdown a sign that the damage is already severe? What parts should not be exposed to alcohol, and is the storage drive or any other component likely to be salvageable if the motherboard is damaged? I'd appreciate realistic odds and advice on the safest next steps.

Isopropyl alcohol is generally safe for exposed circuit boards because it evaporates quickly, but avoid soaking the display, keyboard membranes, batteries, adhesives, and mechanical parts. Use it sparingly with the battery disconnected. The storage may survive if it is a removable SSD, though some configurations use storage that is difficult or impossible to remove separately. Even if the laptop is beyond repair, a technician may be able to recover files from the drive.
The instant shutdown suggests a short circuit or power protection event, but it doesn’t automatically mean the whole laptop is dead. The motherboard may need component-level repair or replacement, and ordinary repair shops often replace the board rather than diagnose the damaged chips. Cleaning is still worthwhile because it can prevent corrosion, but don’t expect it to guarantee recovery.
Stop trying to power it on and remove the charger. If you’re comfortable opening it, disconnect the battery as soon as possible. Wine leaves sugary and acidic residue, so simply letting it dry isn’t enough. Clean affected circuit boards with high-purity isopropyl alcohol and a soft brush, then let everything dry completely for at least a day before testing. Rice doesn’t remove residue and can leave dust or starch behind.
