What should I do before replacing my motherboard?

I'm planning to replace the motherboard in my PC. It's about 6โ€“7 years old, and I've gradually upgraded most of the other components, so the motherboard is one of the last original parts. Are there any steps I should take before swapping it out, such as preparing Windows, removing drivers, or checking compatibility?

You usually donโ€™t need to manually uninstall every old driver before changing the board, but removing the old motherboardโ€™s chipset and manufacturer-specific utilities can help avoid conflicts. Have the new boardโ€™s drivers ready on a USB drive, and be prepared to reinstall or repair Windows if it doesnโ€™t boot normally after the change.

Before replacing it, back up anything important and make sure the new board is compatible with your CPU, RAM, case, power supply, and storage. Download the new motherboardโ€™s chipset, network, and other drivers ahead of time. After the swap, Windows may need to be reactivated, especially if your license is tied to the old hardware or isnโ€™t linked to a Microsoft account. Itโ€™s also a good idea to check whether the replacement board needs a BIOS update.
