What should I do with my old gaming PC?

I've just bought a new pre-built PC because it worked out considerably cheaper than building one myself. My current system is around nine years old and has an Intel i5-8600K, Gigabyte Z370 Aorus Gaming 5 motherboard, Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB, and 16GB of Corsair DDR4 RAM. I'm planning to remove and reuse the 2TB Samsung Pro SSD I added a few years ago, but I'm unsure what to do with the remaining parts. Is there still a worthwhile market for hardware this old, or would I be better off donating, repurposing, or recycling the system?

That’s still a perfectly usable budget gaming PC, so it should sell as a complete system on a local marketplace. You’ll probably get more interest and less hassle selling it assembled rather than splitting every component. The graphics card could also be listed separately if you want to maximize the return.

You could turn it into a home server or NAS. The 8600K has plenty of power for backups, shared storage, media streaming, or a small homelab. You can start with a couple of drives and expand the storage later, provided the case and power supply have room.

It would make a great living-room or media PC. Connect it to the TV with a wireless keyboard and mouse, and it can handle streaming, browsing, music, photo slideshows, and plenty of tasks that smart TVs struggle with.

If you don’t want to deal with selling it, donate the complete machine to a reputable local computer charity, school, or community organization. Otherwise, use a certified electronics recycling service so the components are handled safely. Donating is especially worthwhile if the PC is clean, working, and includes a usable operating system.
