What Should I Expect in a System Administrator Interview?

I have a system administrator interview tomorrow. Someone on the team suggested I focus on Exchange, virtual machines, Active Directory, software deployment, and patching. I have about four years of experience, mostly in technical support, along with some networking exposure. This transition is very important to me, so I'd like to prepare for the kinds of technical, troubleshooting, and behavioral questions I might be asked.

They may give you hypothetical situations, such as a critical system going down while an important manager demands immediate help with a separate issue. Explain how you would assess impact and urgency, communicate priorities, involve the right people, and make sure both issues are tracked. Also research the company and its values so you can connect your experience to the way the team works.

I already completed an initial interview focused mostly on my background and experience. They contacted me again today but only provided the job title and an interview invitation, without a detailed job description, so I’m trying to prepare broadly for the technical portion.

Be honest about what you know and what you don’t. If you’re unfamiliar with something, explain how you would learn it and how you’d safely investigate it. A strong answer is more specific than saying, “I’d Google it”—for example, describe the symptoms, identify the likely subsystem, check logs or monitoring, and search for the exact error or behavior. Interviewers usually want to see that you can think through unfamiliar problems.

Prepare a few stories using the STAR format: Situation, Task, Action, and Result. Have examples of solving a difficult incident, taking initiative, documenting or improving a process, handling pressure, and making a mistake and preventing it from happening again. Communication matters too—explain how you keep users and stakeholders informed, follow an escalation path, and stay calm while working toward a resolution.

Expect questions that test your fundamentals and troubleshooting process rather than perfect knowledge of every tool. Review the OSI model, common networking terms, Active Directory concepts, Exchange basics, virtualization, deployment, patching, and how you would investigate a fault. Be ready to explain your reasoning step by step: what you would check first, what evidence you would gather, how you would isolate the cause, and when you would escalate.
