I recently moved from Linux support into a junior role related to Management Information Systems. I got the position through a referral, but I have not received a detailed job description yet. So far, I only know that the role involves MIS and that SQL is considered especially important. I had assumed MIS work mainly involved Excel and Power BI, so I'm trying to understand what kinds of responsibilities and technical skills I might actually need.

MIS can mean very different things depending on the company. It generally involves providing managers with useful information and supporting the systems that produce it. Your work could include creating reports and dashboards, querying databases with SQL, maintaining data, automating recurring reports, or helping different teams get the information they need. Excel and Power BI may still be part of the job, but SQL is often the foundation for retrieving and preparing the data behind them.
